Brown Girl Beauty Inspo: Solange Knowles's Simple Red Carpet Glamour

After online stalking Solange Knowles's style and her makeup for a while, I'm convinced we're conjoined souls that got separated from each other when the creator up there were sorting out families. My girl 'Lange and I were born a day apart, we're the same height, and I would totally be stealing her wardrobe had we actually been born sisters.

Because I'm in no position to steal her wardrobe, I'll steal her makeup looks instead. I decided to go easy on myself and try this red carpet scene-stealing look she had on at the Angel Ball last year:

She had strong, defined eyes, a healthy, subtle glow on the cheeks, and a bright orangey-red lipstick that I actually wouldn't wear usually. But I decided to go for it--why do something halfway, right?

My tools of the trade... for this look, at least.

Start with foundation. I used Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Oil-Free SPF 20 after my usual sunscreen. (There's no such thing as too many layers of SPF, I like to think, especially since I will eventually sweat away all of it.)

Her eyes in this look were relatively easy: she (or her makeup artist) highlighted the inside of her eyes with a silver shimmer, and then lined her whole eye with black eyeliner before finishing it with false lashes.

With eyeshadow and waterlined lined.

I did the same, except I used Naked Palette's Buck on my whole lid before highlighting my inner eye with Maybelline's Color Tattoo eyeshadow in Bad to The Bronze.

I used Sleek's Eyeliner Gel Pot to start, but it wasn't dark enough, so I had to double and triple up the layers with other eyeliners I had in my possession.

I finished off my eyes with false lashes and multiple coats of my current favorite mascara by Lancome. I also used Shadow Shields under my eyes to catch sparkly shadow fall out. Think of them as pantyliners for your eyes.

On my cheeks I dusted MAC's Powder Blush in Simmer.

For my lips, I needed something BRIGHT and RED. And Lime Crime Velvetines in Red Velvet did the trick. This is such a cool/weird lip paint that stays matte like you literally used a watercolor paint to color your lips. It's in a lipgloss tube but dries matte--bizarre and cool at the same time, but I wish they had more colors!

Then came the hair. I hadn't washed my hair in a day, so I had oils to smooth it down without the need for gels or anything. I parted my hair down the middle and secured it in a low, messy bun.

Notice that crazy vain in the middle of my forehead? I've started noticing it more frequently in my photos lately. WHAT IS THAT?!

And ta-dah! All done. What do you think?

Low messy bun!

I even threw on a booby dress for good measure:
