The Cotton Candy Spun Bun: An Easy Way To Switch Up Your Hair Game

While I'm typically a hair-down kind of gal, every once in a while I'll look at my reflection in the mirror and decide it's a good day for a bun or a side braid or something equally simple. The sock bun is a favorite near and dear to my heart, as is a fishtail that rests on my shoulder like a friendly parrot, but monotony is frowned upon in the beauty world, and thus, I find myself trying new things.

Another one of my "let's change things up a bit" hairstyles is a super-messy, voluminous, teased-out bun that kinda sorta looks like cotton candy. That's why I call it my "cotton candy spun bun." You can call it whatever you want, though.

First, let me show you how to recreate it yourself. It's super-easy, promise!

The necessary before picture. Photography shot with the Canon SL1.
Start by gathering your hair into a ponytail that sits near your crown.
This stuff smells so good!

Evenly spray hairspray throughout your pony tail. You could also use a texturizing spray or DIY salt/water mixture. This will help hold your tease. I'm using the Serge Normant Meta Luxe Hair Spray I received in my Birchbox.

Tease small sections at a time.

Once the hairspray has dried, it's time to tease your hair out. And don't hold back, either. Alle made this awesome teasing video tutorial if you're unsure of where to start. Basically, you take a comb and a small section of hair, then "back comb" it. This creates a ton of volume and texture.

Your hair should look like a hot mess after you've finished teasing.
I just wanted a reason to show off my cute, vintage bobby pin case.

Next, gather 'round about four to six bobby pins. You won't need a ton since teased hair holds them well.

Bobby pins in hand, separate your hair into two even sections.

Very gently wrap one section of hair around your pony tail and secure with one or two bobby pins. Don't pull really tightly or try to brush out the textured tease. The lighter and airier, the better.

The finished look!

Repeat with the remaining section of hair and secure. You can manipulate the hair however you want. I re-teased a little bit just to get that super wispy finished look.

You can also add some accessories to give your "spun bun" a little more charisma:

This is just a little pin I purchased off Etsy a couple years ago.
Bows are also cute!
And from the front, just so you can see how I styled things.

Super easy, no? Definitely doable in under 10 minutes! Think you'll give this one a go?
