Alright, I've done a lot of this "trendy" business: weird pointy nails, nail wraps, neon nails (OK, so a lot of trendy nail crap), dry brushing, and BB cream using. But ever since I got the gold cap on my tooth I’ve been obsessing over oral. (Lol, “oral” will ALWAYS sound dirty to me, and I will continue to force the word into conversation in the worst ways possible.)
Lauren Hutton splashed on the scene with one in the '70s, Madonna made it sexy in the '80s, and we saw a huge resurgence of them in the past few years with models Lindsay Wixon, Ashley Smith, Georgia May, the most beautiful creature on earth Lara Stone; and then there’s that chick from True Blood--that’s right, I’m talking tooth gaps. I actually thought they were dunzo until I saw huge adverts of the gap-toothed Vanessa Paradis staring at me in Union Station this past weekend.
Since I’m not shy to try new trends, I wanted to give the biggest fad in teeth a go. It’s fun, timely, cute, and the greatest thing about this look is that it’s easily achieved at home with stuff you probably already have around the house.
Raid your dad’s, dude’s, or bro’s stash for a straight-edge chisel and a hammer. I’m using Elstar’s 1’’ (similar here) and Toolsmith’s 8-oz claw hammer (similar), but any 3/4’’-1.5’’ chisel and medium-weight hammer will do. Next, decide how large you want your gap to be. Since this is my first foray into gap-tooth territory, I decided to go for a more demure look (not everybody can pull off a full Wixon), and positioned the chisel about 1/8’’ from the center, beginning with my left tooth.
Grab the hammer and give a firm tap to the bottom of the chisel. You should end up with a clean split up to your gum. Give another firm tap to separate the excess tooth, and remove this with a pair of narrow-nose pulling pliers, like PROTO’s J202G.
Rinse any blood with cool tap water, applying pressure with a fluffy hand towel if the bleeding persists. Then continue with the adjacent tooth.
Finish off the edges of the gap with a fine-to-medium-grade steel file. I actually prefer using Revlon’s File-N-Smooth because it’s thin enough to fit between the teeth.
