One of the biggest challenges of having shorter hair has been figuring out how to style it. For a long time, I thought I was out of luck when it came to looser, wavy styles, because all I could figure out was “straightened” or “really curly.” I didn’t seem to have much luck with the middle ground.
But I persevered, and I figured it out. And a great cheering was heard throughout the land!
I wore it like this in my last video, and you guys really wanted to know how I got it so cute and wavy and BIG. Today, I am going to show you!
It is, like pretty much everything I do, SUPER-easy. You’ll probably be disappointed when I show you how easy. Apologies in advance.
You will need a curling iron (barrel thickness dependent on how long your hair is and how tight you want your waves), hairspray and a paddle brush.

The last time I showed you how to curl your hair, I told you to work in sections, starting underneath. This has not changed! If you have shorter hair like I do, please be careful! The littler lengths underneath mean that it’s really easy to accidentally burn yourself on the neck. Don’t look like you’ve been making out with The Human Torch unless you’ve ACTUALLY been making out with The Human Torch. And if you have, please send pictures. because Chris Evans.

Wrap a one-inch section of your hair very loosely around the barrel of the iron once or twice, depending on the length of your hair. We’re going to Goldilocks this right here: don’t start the curl too high up at the roots, nor too low down at the ends. The iron needs to be in the middle for the wave to be juuuuust right.

Make sure the hair is flat and “ribbonlike” against the barrel of the curling iron, rather than twisting it, then wrapping it.
Leave it all twisty when it’s out. Repeat until your entire head is covered in these loose, weird-looking, toddler-beauty-pageant-style sausage curls. Set them with hairspray.
Now, brush our your wavy-waves with your fingers or with a flat brush, if you prefer. The curls will drop a little and start looking a lot nicer.
If, like me, you’re not super-happy with how some of the waves near your face are looking, no worries--grab your curling iron and fix them up! Personally, I like the sections by my face to be a little curlier than the rest of my hair, so that’s how I styled them. Obviously, you do not have to do this.
Now that your curls are right and everything is brushed out, we’re going to use the flat brush and tease our hair gently. This just means backcombing your hair towards the roots, ratting it up a little.
You can work in sections if you like, or you can do what I do and just go at it willy-nilly, attacking any bit of hair that looks like it could use some more volume.
Make sure you don’t neglect the lower layers. These will help give shape and stability to the entire enterprise. This look works best when it’s wide rather than tall, so stick to loosely teasing nearer the ends rather than ratting up by your roots for height.

You can use hairspray as you go, or you can wait until the very end and apply one large dose for hold (which is what I do).
Either way, now you are done!
And that is the end! A voluminous, wavy, super-easy way to style your bob. This took less than 10 minutes, and I’m ready to change my background and shoot a video. Or make out with The Human Torch. Either way!
Are you living the bob life? What is your favourite way to style your shorter hair? Are there any particular hairstyles you’d like me to try and master? Nobody is allowed to say finger waves, though; I cannot do those on myself no matter how hard I try, which is such a shame.
